Principal's Welcome

Durand Middle School is dedicated to "Empowering a community of learners to believe they have the ability to achieve greatness through a safe, engaging, and respectful school environment." As an NCA accredited school and a MiBLSi school, our team of teachers collaborates on a continual school improvement plan to providing the best opportunities for our students.

We have approximately 370 students in grades 5th through 7th with 20 teachers, a full time At-Risk Coordinator, and guidance counselor. Our staff is dedicated to working together to offer a curriculum that is aligned and spirals as students progress from one grade to the next.

The teaching staff and principals have been working under the guidance of Dr. Harvey Silver of Silver, Strong and Associates for the past 4 years. Dr. Silver's 30 years of research is modeled around the Thoughtful Classroom and the four dominant learning styles. Using the Thoughtful Classroom model, our teachers have committed numerous professional development hours to developing powerful lessons, curriculum units that incorporate multiple learning styles and the state standards, and integrating technology into the classroom.

At Durand Middle School, we offer a variety of extracurricular activities that are important components to a well rounded education. We realize the importance of teamwork and a strong parent and community partnership throughout the educational process. We look forward to making lifelong connections with students and the community.

We believe DMS is a model school where students want to be.
